What happens when my domain expires?

When your domain expires, several things can happen depending on the policies of your domain registrar and the registry that manages the domain's top-level domain (TLD). Here are some common scenarios:

  1. Grace Period: Hosteasy offer a grace period after the expiration date during which you can still renew the domain without any additional fees. This period can vary in length, typically ranging from a few days to a couple of weeks depending upon the domain extension. For .in and .com domains, there is typically a grace period of up to 35 days after the expiration date.

  2. Renewal: If you renew your domain during the grace period, the domain will usually be reinstated without any interruption to your website or email services.

  3. Domain Redemption Period: After the grace period ends, if you still haven't renewed your domain, it may enter a redemption period, which typically lasts for 15 days. During this time, you can still reclaim the domain by paying additional redemption fees charged by the registrar. However, it's important to note that if you renew your domain during the redemption period, it may take up to 24 hours for your website to return to normal functioning.

  4. Release to Public: If you do not renew the domain during the redemption period, it will eventually be released back to the public pool of available domains. This typically occurs after 70 to 75 days from the expiration date. Once released, anyone can register the domain on a first-come, first-served basis.

It's essential to keep track of your domain's expiration date and renew it promptly to avoid any disruptions to your online presence. Additionally, consider setting up reminders to ensure you don't forget to renew your domain on time.
